Deep sea fishing was probably the form of angling that put Key West on the map thorugh Hemmingways days as an angler on the Pilar. That magic has not faded one bit, in fact it has expanded dramatically. We hold many deep sea fishing tournaments right here in Key West for blue marlin, dolphin, kingfish and sailfish. In fact, the sailfish tournament here in key West is the World Championship. So you know fishing has to be good on our deep sea trips.
Flats fishing in Key West has become more popular in the past 30 years and evolved in a few directions but the Key West grand slam is still a tarpon, permit and bonefish. In the past 5 years our bonefish population has exploded. It is not uncommon for an angler of any age or skill level to go catch a few bonefish in a 4 hour trip durring our warmer months. Our tarpon fishing is second to nowhere, we get them on the flats in the channels and all in our Key West harbor. Anglers that fish with our guides can expect great results especially durring the spring migration where thousands upon thousands of fish pour through our area ready to eat. A newer fishery that is expanding is our redfishing this is a welcome addition to our already fantastic inshore flats fishing hopefully added soon to the Key West super grand slam.
What is Backcountry Fishing? Glad you asked. Call it an expansion of flats fishing. We still fish the flats but, we are using bay boats that float in 12 inches of water and trolling motors that are remote control so we can assist our anglers right up front in the boat for an easy day of fishing for the Key West grand slam or tarpon, permit, and bonefish. Backcountry fishing also allows more anglers to attend as the boats can carry up to 4 persons. This is becomming a very popular way to go fishing in Key West for many reasons, the main one being more fun and more fish.
Key West Wreck and Reef light tackle fishing is incredible. We are not sure there is another place in the world that offers such diversity with 70 miles of reef line stretchng out to the West from Key West and over 85 known shipwrecks within an hours run from Key West. The grouper and snapper fishing is absolutely insane! The Dry tortugas and the Marquesas Keys are close by and offer the Jurasaic park of fishing for bottom fish and tuna that will make any angler shake with anticipation. Twin and triple engine 27 - 36 ft center console boats are used for this to make it fast and comfortable.
Key West is famous. Hemmingway lived and fished here. It's a fun little island town with a fishing and drinking problem. Key West has been in countless movies and people come here year after year to enjoy the "island life" and still be in a free country.
